A deadly explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, claimed four lives and left many others injured on Sunday morning.

The blast reportedly occurred as miners resumed operations for the day. Although the exact cause remains unclear, local residents speculate that the mishandling of explosives used by mining companies might have triggered the explosion.

Community sources confirmed that four bodies had been recovered, while the total number of casualties remains uncertain, with fears that more victims could still be found.

A resident, Aminu, recounted the chaos that followed the blast: “The explosion was so loud that people thought it came from the hydroelectric dam nearby. Many ran into the bush out of fear. It was later discovered that the explosion happened at the mining site in Sabon Pegi.”

Another resident suggested that the use of explosives during mining activities in the area might be responsible for the incident. “Mining companies here often use explosives. While there have been past reports of terrorist activity in the area, this particular incident is unrelated to terrorism,” he stated.

As of the time of this report, neither the state government nor security agencies have issued an official statement. Investigations into the cause of the explosion

are ongoing.
