Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has won the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards, solidifying her status as one of Africa’s most celebrated artists.
The award ceremony took place on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.
Tems clinched the prestigious award with her hit song Love Me Jeje, surpassing strong competition from other top African artists. This marks her second Grammy win, having previously won the Best Melodic Rap Performance award in 2023 for Wait For U, a collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Tems expressed gratitude to God and her team, dedicating the award to her mother.
"Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team," she said.
At 29, Tems has now won more Grammy awards than any other Nigerian artist, further cementing her place on the global stage.
Tems' success in the Best African Music Performance category is a testament to her growing influence. Her song Love Me Jeje—which interpolates Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic—became an instant hit, topping the UK Afrobeats Chart and reaching No. 3 on Billboard’s US Afrobeats Songs.
Beyond this latest win, Tems also received two additional Grammy nominations in 2025:
1. Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild)
2. Best R&B Song (Burning)
Her debut album, Born in the Wild, has been widely recognized for blending R&B, Afrobeats, and nostalgic African pop influences, earning her a nomination alongside global stars like Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
With two Grammy wins and multiple nominations, Tems continues to solidify her legacy as a trailblazer for African music on the international stage.
