Nigeria’s Super Eagles took a big step towards FIFA World Cup qualification with a 2-0 win over Rwanda’s Amavubi on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Stade Amahoro in Kigali.

Star man Victor Osimhen was the match winner, scoring both goals for Nigeria. The Napoli forward scored in the 11th minute from a beautiful free-kick by Ademola Lookman. Just before half-time, Osimhen capitalised on a defensive error and chipped the ball over the Rwandan goalkeeper to double Nigeria’s lead.

This was Eric Chelle’s first game as head coach of the team and the Super Eagles looked cohesive and disciplined, a reflection of Chelle’s approach to revamping the team. With this win, Nigeria now has 6 points in the group and their World Cup hopes alive.

They are still 4 points behind group leaders South Africa but with many games to come, the Super Eagles will try to bridge the gap. Fans all over Nigeria are celebrating and hope is high that they will make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Many are praising Osimhen’s leadership and the team’s performance under Chelle. As the qualifiers continue, Nigeria will try to build on this momentum in their next games, with the mix of veterans and young players giving them hope to be back at the biggest stage of them all.
