The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to the gruesome murder and burning of a young woman in the Gangare area behind Mile 12 Market, Lagos, on May 24.

Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday, clarifying that the attack was a premeditated act allegedly orchestrated by the victim’s estranged boyfriend and his accomplices.

“The victim, identified as a native of Nasarawa State, was lured and set ablaze in what appears to be a deliberate and targeted killing,” Hundeyin stated. “Contrary to widespread misinformation, there was no case of blasphemy involved.”

According to the police, the deceased had been residing in the community with her relatives from the northern region, although her specific occupation remains unknown.

“Preliminary investigations revealed a protracted dispute between the woman and her former boyfriend, who is currently on the run,” the statement said. “Two suspects are in custody and are cooperating with detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to locate other accomplices.”

Boyfriend, Others Still at Large

Police say the estranged boyfriend attempted to forcefully rekindle the relationship, which led to a conspiracy and the brutal attack. Efforts are ongoing to track and arrest him and others still at large.

Hundeyin assured the public that calm had returned to the area and that the police were in full control of the situation.

“Residents of Lagos, particularly in Mile 12 and its environs, should remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear,” he said. “We urge the public to avoid spreading unverified information that may incite panic or unrest.”

He added that the police remain resolute in their duty to safeguard lives and property and will provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
