The Kano State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a violent mob attack that led to the tragic death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Division and one other individual.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on May 25 in Rano Local Government Area. It followed the arrest of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who was allegedly riding recklessly under the influence of intoxicating substances.

According to a statement released on Monday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the suspect later exhibited signs of weakness in custody and was rushed to the Rano General Hospital. He died the following morning, May 26, at about 6:00 a.m. while receiving treatment.

“Following the incident, miscreants reportedly mobilised and attacked the Rano Police Division. Parts of the station and two vehicles were set ablaze, while 10 other vehicles were vandalised,” Kiyawa stated.

The DPO, who sustained severe injuries during the attack, was later confirmed dead at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

In response to the unrest, the police confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects linked to the violence. Normalcy has since been restored in the area with police presence maintained to prevent further disturbances.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene and also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, Alhaji Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19). He assured the public of a transparent and thorough investigation to identify both the remote and immediate causes of the unrest.

“We will ensure that everyone found culpable is brought to justice,” CP Bakori emphasized.

The command described the late DPO as a gallant officer who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. It also urged residents to remain law-abiding and avoid resorting to self-help, reassuring the public of its unwavering commitment to peace and order in the state.
